From gardening tools to kitchen knives and woodworking chisels, this full-day workshop will give you the knowledge to sharpen almost any tool. Bring along your own tools to learn & practice with – and sharpen them!

This workshop is suitable for beginners and for those who want to refine their sharpening techniques.

Description

This full-day workshop will give you the knowledge to sharpen almost any tool. From gardening tools to kitchen knives and woodworking tools. The day will be a mixture of theory and most importantly, practice.

We will provide a wide range of water, oil, diamond, and natural bench stones and abrasives films. We will cover the pros and cons of all these abrasives, and find the right fit for your tools’ requirements. Some electric sharpening and polishing equipment will be available and we will discuss the best affordable tools sited to your requirements.

You will learn:

  • A variety of sharpening techniques
  • A focus on observation as the most important aspect of sharpening
  • An understanding of Edge Geometry in general, and concerning specific tools
  • How to use a microscope to highlight both good and bad techniques

 

Bring your own tools to sharpen, the more the merrier as well as any sharpening equipment. We will also provide some chisels and knives as well as sharpening jigs.

Suitable for beginners and for those who want to refine their sharpening techniques.

 

Professional woodworker, tool maker and author of Sharp ‘the bible of sharpening’, Sean’s skills have been honed by over thirty years of making, teaching, and running tool-sharpening workshops around the UK.  As well as being passionate about green woodwork crafts, Sean runs an electric workshop in Buckfastleigh, Devon.

About the tutor; Sean Hellman

Sean Hellman has been practicing, teaching and demonstrating green woodwork skills for over 20 years. Based in South Devon, he runs a business selling bespoke sculptural and traditional wooden seating, and original items for the home and garden. Sean’s passion is learning and teaching traditional wood crafts, including making wooden spoons, carved cups, bowl-turning, shrink pots, etc. He is the only professional green woodworker making and selling ‘fan birds’ in the UK.

Sean not only teaches and makes, but is an active writer and has a regular blog about woodworking, offering advice and inspiration about the joys of working green wood. He is an active member of the ‘Bodgers Forum’ the largest green woodworking forum in the world.

Some of his articles can be seen in various woodworking magazines such as Living Woods. Sean last TV appearance was on Edwardian Farm making a coracle with Alex Langlands.

Sean has recently taken on a full time apprentice.
